erica and i finally found the gas city zoo on friday. the animals look very depressed and it's pretty reflective the depression of indiana. we drove around gas city some which was a first for me, and did a little bit of walking in jonesboro, and it's a pretty rough place around here.
we spent last night and this morning down in greenwood with her relatives.

i swear, my mind picks the greatest times to get all cranky and moody on me. an hour before i see my girlfriend and im going into jerkwad mode. so distracted that i cant even do homework im just sitting here staring at the walls waiting for dinner to come. yeah im nervous for whatever reason and i can live with that silliness but it's turning into familiar grumpiness which i'd rather not have to deal with. hopefully it'll vanish when i finally see her but past experience tells me that's hoping for a lot. there are a lot of times where i wonder what in the world is wrong with me. and even more times when i wonder when in the world will she finally get sick of the crap i put her through and find someone stable.

but maybe no one's actually stable. maybe that's hollywood feeding me lies again.

ha, that made me laugh. maybe that's a good sign.

gee whiz im a schizo.
this blog is going downhill fast. partly because im busy, partly because there's a lack of things to write about but i still feel a need to post things which makes it pretty pointless and bland, partly because im directing my input towards the taylor blog. whatever.
erica is a half hour away from me and the feeling is weird. she is at iwu waiting to meet up. for some reason im incredibly nervous and my stomach is kind of in knots. its a first-date kind of feeling. not sure why..but its a little unnerving. i dont know what unnerving means.
shaps won the primaries for student body president, and i have a feeling it has a lot to do with the song jared and i made. maybe i should convince him to give me a cut of his campaign money.
im trying to get work done before erica arrives...which is proving to be challenging...we are going to see STOMP tonight at ball state which im pretty pumped about. my music for teachers prof is going too, and i told him i was going, and i think i scored a teachers-pet-point or two.
the weather is improving and it's glorious.

milford middle school lost pretty badly tonight. i'd rather not talk about it. although i did get 1 point which is an improvement from last game. a free throw even...who knew i could make free throws?
today in music for teachers, i let scott borrow my recorder cuz he forgot his and i already know how to play the recorder. when my prof noticed, he said "what if nate has AIDS?" it caught all of us pretty off guard and we all had a good laugh.
this is a pretty great treasure i just found. lots and lots of archives.
im just realizing this...
i like documentaries and instumental music. i like movies without plots and music without words.
why am i so weird?
and its not that i'm forcing myself to like them so i can be more indie and artsy fartsy. they really are my preference.
hmpf.
hollllllllllllllly bonkers i forgot about the album leaf's music. whoop there it is.
well, if you thought spellbound sounded boring (which it isnt...andy, even you would enjoy it, i think), you would be even more surprised to hear that we watched winged migration last night and that was really good too. it's an hour and a half of lots of different species of birds flying with very little narration. i will admit it is far from enthralling, but the footage is absolutely incredible and neville and i agreed that it is one of the few movies we would call "breathtaking." it really is beautiful and if you give it a chance i think you'll agree. right jamin? :)

whats going on.
last night jared and i recorded a campaign song for a kid named shaps who is running for student body president. it was a lot of fun. i took care of the guitar, jaw harp, tamborine, hand claps, and subliminal messaging, and jared took care of the vocals, harmonica, cap gun, hand claps, and subliminal messaging. the final product was quite amusing.
when i was playing the jaw harp, i thought i had lots of excess saliva, but when i finally paused and looked down at the thing, it was covered in blood and there was splattered blood all over my hands. what made it even worse is jared made me redo the take 2 more times after that. i felt like bryan adams in the summer of 69.
we had a men's conference today and it was really good. erik thoennes talked about identity, integrity, and initiative. that man is super down to earth and has such a handle on theology and you can tell it really impacts his life. a lot of the times it seems like the theologians know it all but its not really effecting their lives while the flashy speakers tell all the jokes and good stories and sometimes drive home a good point but it's pretty meatless. thoennes knows what he's doing and he makes you want to lock yourself in your room all day and read your bible. he stirs up emotion...but not the kind of emotion from good stories and fancy crescendos in worship songs that can be pretty fake sometimes...it's emotion from seeing the gospel laid out before you crystal clear and you get it and it just kinda makes you wanna burst and scream and cry and dance around like a crazy man and rejoice and sit quietly and think and just go nuts. the same thing happened when he was here in the fall, september 15, when i said "holy moly what a day. im bursting at the seams. im dumbfounded. i dont know where to go or how to start or what but ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"...so...yeah..it was a good time.

pet peeve of today: people who call at 9:15 AM, wake you up, and proceed to not leave a message when you're too asleep to answer.
so far, to my knowledge, ham is the only person who's taken me up on my blue like jazz recommendation. jamin is too a little bit but only because i'm forcing him to. but i think ham is glad he did. so the rest of you need to get with the program.
its a nice day today and the ice is melting hooray.

i recorded a song last night. i dont particularly like it but it was kinda fun and turned out ok. 2 guitar tracks, harmonica, and some goofy preacher i found on the radio talking about death and soul-spirits and stuff. ok bye.

this thing is getting a little ignored with the launching of the taylor blogs. that thing is pretty nervewracking, to be honest. i got so many comments on it today...from teachers...from people i know who have graduated...from pretty much everyone i ran into on campus...the size of the audience i am writing to is so huge and so diverse and im representing taylor so i have to be pretty careful but it is all just so funny to me. i feel really popular or something and that makes me laugh.
i have a feeling though, that this will become a place for my thoughts and mental struggles and the taylor blog will become a place for events and funny stories. we'll see.
joanna and jenny wanted to be popular and have their names put in the taylor blog, so i made them sound as sweet and terrific and cheezy as ever and im still laughing about it. maybe i should start charging people to have their names mentioned in it.
intramural basketball started last night. it was pretty hilarious and i played so terribly it wasnt even remotely funny. actually that's not true at all. i played so terribly that it was even more hilarious. we won big time which was a nice change of pace.
god's been giving me joy and peace of mind and fun lately and that's been really pleasant. so much joy, in fact, that joe ozinga commented on my jolliness...that kinda blew me away cuz if anyone is mr. jolly it's joe ozinga. when the king of jolly tells you you're jolly, you know god's up to something.
i have music running through my head that i want to record, but i dont think i can do a whole lot of quality stuff without having a microphone stand. if you have one to donate, please let me know.

just watched the big interview on tv...mel gibson vs. diane sawyer.
i'll say that i'm thoroughly impressed with mel gibson.
i'll leave the rest of my comments unsaid. i have a feeling they'll spill out eventually...especially once the movie is out and everyone's talking...but...until then...i'd rather not.

it was a fun weekend. i traveled the 5 and a half hours to pittsburgh friday night. i've never given pittsburgh or western PA much credit, but it's a pretty cool place. it's kinda depressed and run down from all the industry and stuff at places...but there is a hardworking spirit there and there's lots of mountains and it's pretty neat. lots of rivers too, which is cool. rumor has it that pittsburgh is the 2nd city in the world with the most bridges behind venice. who knew?
anna kate's (erica's roommate) parents were very gracious hosts. they are in the middle of completely renovating their newly acquired house and it's quite the task. im sure they didnt feel like having house guests, but they faked it well and erica and i didnt mind the condition of the house. it will be absolutely beautiful when it's finished.
we spent some time visiting anna kate's friend julieanne at university of pittsburgh. there are some people you run into and they give you a sense of a hope...you can see god in them and you end up saying "this world's not so bad after all..there's still hope." julieanne was one of those people. she's intelligent and motivated and learning chinese and politics and all kinds of wild stuff. she showed us her chinese classroom and wrote stuff on the chalkboard and spoke some of it and man oh man chinese is a wild language. but it was exciting to see that.
university of pittsburgh is beautiful. i know god has me at taylor for a reason and i dont regret it, but when i visit schools like temple or pitt i wonder why he couldnt have led me to one of those schools! i love the city.
erica and i went to see big fish on valentines day which was good for the most part. we saw it in a theater that was a state-of-the-art huge megaplex fancy schmancy theater.....15 years ago. it was very 80s and getting a little rundown but they were still trying to be new and hip. so much so that they charged us 8.25 a ticket. give me a break.
we tried to find some place nice to eat and ended up at a restaurant called dingbats and it was absolutely terrible. we really arent picky people, im not sure why we always have bad experiences at restaurants. as we left i said, "erica, one of these days you and i will go to a restaurant...and we will enjoy it." i hope that's true. our waitress visited us a grand total of 3 times...once to take our order, once in passing saying "is everything ok?", and once to give us our check. it was terrible. i wanted to leave a 10% tip which wouldve been more than sufficient, especially considering the extremely overpriced food, but erica's a softy and had to throw in an extra dollar.
we went to an episcopal church on sunday morning which was a first for me. it was more contemporary than traditional so it was a good way to be exposed. i enjoyed it for the most part and i think god's using that church in the community which is neat to see. denominations can be nasty things sometimes...rarely do we take the time to check out what is really going on behind the doors of a church.
back to school. things are picking up a little bit more this week. we'll see how i handle it.

im working the desk and trying to pass the time.
i am pretty tired today and pretty sure i'm getting sick. that sore throat i mentioned? i dont think it was the corn chips, unfortunately. im supposed to be driving to pittsburgh this afternoon...but i dont exactly feel like doing that...so we'll see how that goes.
so here's a funny story.
since tomorrow is valentines day, my dorm decided to go all out and ask every girl on the campus to be our valentines. this involved: 1) making 2 super long banners to hang in the chapel that said stuff and had each girls name written on them, 2) delivering valentines to each girls' mailbox, 3) opening doors and being nice and stuff like that and 4) wearing ties.
i decided to go all out. i wore the top half of my tux with jeans and sneakers. so i guess that's only halfway out.
well in my first class, my teacher kinda chuckled at me and went on with class. she went on to tell us that she was interviewed by a reporter for an article about the number of men enrolled in elementary education. she went on to say that he would be coming in to take pictures of our class this morning. at that point she looks at me, as well as the rest of the class, and i start busting up laughing. the article is about guys, i am one of 8 guys (out of 42 in the class - we were combined with another class this morning), so chances are the picture would involve me in some way. i am picturing a photo of the entire class with the 8 guys in the front, me in my stupid tux, on the front page of sunday's newspaper.
luckily, frenchy was running back to the dorm between classes, and the photographer wasnt there yet, so i made him grab me a t-shirt. when the photographer got there i quick took my tux off and put on the t-shirt. everyone was kinda laughing at me. as it turned out, he was just taking candid pictures of the class, so i probably couldve gotten away with it. and at first he wasnt taking any pictures on my side of the room so it was all a big waste..making frenchy get a t-shirt and me changing in my seat. but then he came to my side and took a ton of pictures of frenchy and a few of me and he asked what our names were so maybe i'll be in the newspaper.

just trying out some things...



if this worked, you should be able to see me at age 3, getting my brand new dunk-it basketball net for christmas in my brand new gridiron pj's...i was quite the jock when i was little.
my throat is pretty sore and i cant figure out if it's from the jagged corn chips i ate at lunch or if i'm getting sick.
i got an oil change at walmart today. i roamed all over the store while i waited. there are bouquets placed everywhere for valentine's day..mostly at the places where the men will find them and get a clue. the hardware counter, right next to the shotguns in the sports section, in the men's clothing section, where you pay for your oil changes, etc. kinda humorous. if you dont feel bad for men on this holiday, you should. although, i do feel bad for the women too...last night when i was in walmart to girls approached me and asked me what guys like for valentines day. i thought they were buying something for me, so i said just give me the money. but then they assured me i wasnt. i really didnt know what to tell them. what do you get guys for valentines day??? its just a bad holiday all the way around.

oh and one more thing...something happened to my radio antenna and i cant get a single radio station anymore.
i thought the weather and a drive would help my funk. i went to walmart to get my oil changed. but walmart in marion doesnt have an auto care section. so i couldnt get it done and i didnt want to wait anywhere else. i got the last of the stuff i need to record though so hooray for that. and then i noticed that swinburne busted the lock on my passenger door when we were doing a drive-by snowball throwing earlier in the day. so, needless to say, the funk continues.
i think it's safe to say that i'm officially "in a funk." today is day 3 of zombie-like tendencies. not cranky or in a bad mood...just anti-social and unhappy waiting for another day to end. maybe not having homework or much of a schedule yet has something to do with it...but i dont think having those things would make anything better. i'd like to do some reading but cant even focus on that. i just kinda float through the day passing time as quickly as possible. im not sure what it's all about. i am missing erica and that might have something to do with it all...it's looking like i might be meeting her in pittsburgh this weekend though, so maybe that will give me a little kick in the buttocks or something. but im just pretty emotionless right now. the most excited/happy i've gotten all week was when i found out last night that pedro and death cab are playing together in chicago. and even that wasnt the normal display of excitement. maybe i'm just ready for spring. pms is probably the most logical explanation.
my eyesight is getting worse and worse. maybe it's time for contacts. but we all know i'm too lazy for that.
i get headaches a lot too.
and i dont get enough sleep at night.
i need to get an oil change this afternoon.
i think i'd like to start writing more letters. im not sure what it is...but there's something about writing letters that is a lot more beautiful than any other form of communication. maybe its just this idealistic beauty that's in my head right now and as soon as i sit down to write a letter it will miserably fail..but..i do get a little tired of email sometimes. well, i dont get tired of email, but i think it's ashame that letters (now affectionately known as "snail-mail") have become a lost art. not that i really wrote letters to begin with. but thats not true, i did write to my sister every now and then when she first went to college...i'd have everyone in my class write a note to her even though she didnt really know any of them and then i would mail all of it to her. i wish i had a sweet little brother. ok, this entry is getting worse and worse as i go. anyway, i'm not making any guarantees, but if you're willing to try, than so am i:

its been kind of a long day. i guess you could say im in a bad mood. maybe not a bad mood...but one where im just kinda going through the motions waiting for the day to end.
i still havent really had any homework for my classes, and it's making me really nervous. im getting kinda used to it, and i know once the work comes, i'll be a little surprised. now that im thinking about it, actually, i think i'll have quite a bit to do for wednesday, but i'll be out of the room until 9:00 tomorrow night. so that might be interesting. we'll see.
i played my organ a bit tonight. i'll have a mike by the end of the week so im practicing up and getting ready.
my night was so slow and not great that i completely forgot i was supposed to work the desk at 11. i was planning on going to bed and for some reason at 11:15 it dawned on me. the guy before me's a sweetheart, though, and he stuck around for me.
things for the new taylor blogs are underway and they will be up on february 19th. prepare yourselves.

i watched 28 days later today. while it isnt the type of movie i readily enjoy, it was beautifully done and a pretty great movie.
tonight i went to hear this multimedia percussionist guy play in the recital hall. i mostly liked it..some things were good, others weren't. it was pretty innovative and wild. a lot of the songs included recorded accompaniment. 1 included a film made from andy warhol's 100 cans and another included a film made from rauchemberg's ACE. that was pretty great. one song he was playing a tambourine with his foot in 5/8 time while he played the marimba and 4 toms with 4 mallets in two hands in 4/4 time all at once. it was great.
after that i did my best to write some material for the next IFC journal. we'll see what the head honcho thinks of it. hi joanna.
last night didnt hold too much excitement, but it was fairly enjoyable nonetheless.
i got caught up with erica finally and that was pleasant and needed.
then i watched lost in translation with kyle on our new dvd player. i had seen in the theater, but it was great to see again. im pretty sure i really love it. im not sure if i've ever seen a movie that does a better job of capturing very natural emotion. its incredibly easy to relate to...not necessarily being lost in the middle of a country where you dont fit in...but in interacting with someone you've bonded with and everything that goes along with that. it captures emotion very true to life. i like it.
after that i just hung out here and there on the floor. nothing too exciting. we got more snow last night. who knew we were expecting more. i suppose we should be counting on it by now. i was gonna go down to indy to a music store to find a mike, but im not sure what the roads are looking like. maybe i'll go grab some lunch and watch a movie and whatever else. we'll see.

everybody's got a cause, and everybody's cause is the most important one.
i dont like environment and society so far. besides the fact that it has been pretty boring, so far its just been the professor pushing the agenda for his cause, trying desperately to convince us that christians' main concern needs to be taking care of the environment. he really does make some great points, and i even agree with him for the most part.
but the fact is, when this class is all said and done, there will most likely be no more students signing up to save a manatee than there were in the first place. its incredibly difficult to convince people outside of their interests.
the nature nerds think that recycling is the most important concern for christians...the artsy farts in IFC think the most important concern is letting people know its ok to watch rated R movies (as long as we think in the process)...the african americans think the most important concern is racism...the pacifists want the church to know that not going to war should be our main concern...anti-abortion...homosexuality...etc etc etc...whatever their favorite issue is.
everyone has their cause, and their cause is the one single most important concern facing the church today. but no matter how hard they preach it, people have their interests and opinions set pretty well and will very rarely be swayed or convinced.
the fact is, most of them are valid concerns, and people should be speaking out about them. we need that, i guess. some of them are very important concerns. but some should warrant more attention than others. but maybe that's my bias talking.
maybe im just looking for a little more humility? a little more focus on the basics, the big things? loving mercy, acting justly, walking humbly?
things seem a little one-sided i guess. yeah, i think that's it. the environmentalists are racist, the racial reconcilers are wasting water. but when these issues are scripturally based, and we are seeking to live in accordance with the scriptures, then each one is equally important. then, if each issue is equally important, we should not be speaking out about one without following the other...unless we have a way to refute the argument. so maybe this post is about hypocrisy? or at least unbalance.
i think if i were living in complete accordance with the scriptures, i would be a vegetarian. i think there's a good argument for vegetarianism. maybe im not convicted enough. maybe i love a good cheeseburger too much. maybe i love a good cheeseburger more than god? (maybe that's what my actions are saying.)
maybe this is all legalism?
am i making any sense? this is a very convoluted post and i am literally thinking this through as i type. im not sure where im going with any of it and dont have a conclusion..but..yeah.
so, that's environment and society.
go adopt a whale.
but if you do that, be sure to be nice to your neighbor while you're at it. and think about art a little bit. and dont abort your baby, either. and love your gay friend, but dont condone his actions. and protest the war.
what am i saying?!? sorry for such a crazy post.

kyle's concerned he's becoming a metrosexual. im counseling him.
for some reason my eyes are burning out of their sockets and it hurts to look at this computer screen.
the sun was out in full force today, and although im pretty sure it was still in the 20's, everyone was acting like it was the first day of spring. spirits were up, people were out and about, and it was a nice feeling. the ice was melting a little bit, which is a good thing. indiana is still a little behind, i guess...they havent figured out theres this stuff called salt that will magically melt ice. so we have to wait for the sun to show up and help us out.
very soon yours truly will be head director adminstrator person of a 6-person blog team for taylor admissions. that should be a good time. i'll let you know when things are up and running.
had some floor meetings tonight and a rousing game of farkle followed. i must admit the magic and intensity of farkle is disappearing with age...and deep inside i think i really actually wanted to lose. or at least come close to it. sure i'd have to shave my head or my legs...but it would give me a lot more of an adrenaline rush, i guess. always trying to reach that first high again...huh? ha. maybe next year.
i made a little artsy fartsy creation tonight...sharpie, paint, and crayon on an indiana map. a guitar. whatever.
not too much going on...at least not that im remembering to do. only one class tomorrow which is nice. um. yeah.
is it just me, or is this incredibly lame? oh well.

unfortunately, i've noticed a reemergence in the popularity of the nickname "shorby" as of late. in related news, i like it when people call me "nathan" and "nateshorb" which have also become popular choices. not so much "nathan"...but every once in a while.
im so glad you care.
im not one to complain about the weather too often...but holy moly this weather is absolutely miserable.
when i signed up for the 11pm-1am shift on monday nights, i think i was thinking i could sleep in a lot later on tuesdays than i actually can. *sigh*
i just remembered i forgot to watch my big fat obnoxious fiancee tonight. whoops.
first day of school down. it started out pretty well, but by the end of the day i was a little overwhelmed and just kinda cranky. i think im mostly tired. but it will definitely be a challenging semester. we'll see.
im looking forward to music for teachers, i think. the professor is one cooooooooooool cat. he looks like the blue owl from the muppets. and he has a low raspy voice and talks like a jazzy cool cat. he seems pretty interesting, so i think the class will be fun. plus we get to play african drums and recorders and piano and stuff like that. we'll see what happens. hopefully he can be my connection to a glockenspiel when i need one for recording.
speaking of recording, i went to buy a microphone today, but wasnt too sure of the prices i was seeing. so im still waiting on that before i record. but i did get all the adapters and cables and stuff that i need. so once i get a mike, cable, and stand, i'll be set. feel free to donate.
at this point, the plan will be for me to start a song on the 4-track, put it on my computer, email it to nate su, and have him master it and add the rest of the tracks. that could lead to some fun and interesting creations.
i have no books to sell this semester which is a pretty big bummer. last semester i owned books for 4 of my 5 classes, 3 of the 4 are only offered in the fall semester, and the 4th changed books. oh well.
im hungry.
how bout that super bowl last night? as much as i hate what the super bowl does to our country, i will admit it ended up being quite a good game last night.
please enter any and all ideas for a thematic unit in the comments section. it needs to be a topic that i wont get sick of easily. something broad enough to have related lessons in social studies, math, language arts, science, and all the other subjects. i have no idea what to do. so help me out.

(How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!)
one month of january is gone. can you believe it?
second semester starts tomorrow. i am naively looking forward to it. i am dreading it, but i know it will be nice to get into the swing of things again. im looking forward to having fun and i hope i do.
i am feeling very joyful and very blessed tonight. god is good. i have a healthy nephew who is one year old today. i have a brother and sister-in-law who are raising two beautiful children and im pretty proud of them. i have a sister who is a bigwig counselor but an incredibly humble woman. i have a brother-in-law who has started a church in the city and making impacts for god's kingdom. i have a dad who is leading a missions trip on the island of guadeloupe...a humble servant and hard worker. a mom who has experienced the grace of god in amazing ways and is helping a huge group of women grow closer to christ each week. i have a beautiful girlfriend who is so incredibly talented and i cant wait to see where she ends up cuz it will be good no matter what. god is blessing my friends and they are beautiful and fun and bring me joy. christ gave himself for me so that i may live and experience freedom and hope and love.
so why do i complain so often?
its nights like these that you never want to go to sleep because you're afraid when you wake up the feeling will be lost.
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
