the big mates of state concert is tonight, which is exciting. but this brings up a few points.
A. you would think that by now, taylor people would know that we bring in national acts to play. pretty much every band that plays at taylor is not only not a taylor band, but they are not from indiana. but no one seems to get the pattern. take mates of state, for instance. i dont expect people to know they are from san francisco, but for goodness sakes, just because they are playing at taylor doesnt mean they are a taylor band! today at lunch, someone asks me, and he's not the only person, "so, are mates of state a taylor band?" NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get with it people..we are working to bring in valid bands that are on national tours that get recognition from major publications (people seem to miss the flyers that have quotes from NY Times and SPIN), but you complain because we're not bringing in dave matthews.
i dont mean to be as harsh as i sound.
i suppose "where are mates of state from?" is a better question. because it's already assuming they are not a taylor band. which is the first step. i guess. thats getting technical. but it makes sense.
B. i am slowly beginning to realize and accept that some people are just artistically challenged, as neville graciously phrased it and shared with me. this fact must eventually be faced by those who are a little more artistically inclined. if people werent artistically challenged, movies like triple-x and bands like creed wouldnt be as insanely popular as they are. plain and simple. so...i am realizing i just need to be a little more understanding in these areas and let people like what they like because thats just how they are. this sounds pretentious, but in reality, it's me realizing the reason for non-pretentiousness. so its not pretentious.
enough blabber.
vote travis yoder for homecoming court. popular people are cool!

i need to come up with a good name for a sheep. so far my ideas are walter...or baaaaaaaaxter. let me know if you think of any others.
jimmy eat world's "clarity" never ever ever gets old. it sits on the cd rack for a few months, you finally put it in, and say "why the heck havent i been listening to this nonstop for all of my life?"
found out today that the church in haiti we worked with over spring break has built the second half of the balcony and are now working on the rest of the walls. that is really exciting news! so they may not have any work for us this spring break...we'll see. exciting to know how are money is being used though. i guess the pastor from down there is coming here in the next few weeks, which will be exciting.
im watching citizen kane tonight for my art class. kinda looking forward to it.
what a morning.
i awoke to a voice saying "shorb...i don't know where you're at...but if you're there...we just finished the test and you're not here....wake up...."
it was 8:30...i know my alarm was set, but must have turned it off without waking up...i was so sound asleep that i didnt even hear the phone ringing, just good ol' scott talking on the answering machine.
i was a little worried because this is the strict teacher trying to turn us into professionals - as mentioned in the keep your flip flops on in class post. i thought i was gonna have to deal with a zero...but she was very merciful and let me take it this afternoon.
so i was very dissheveled the rest of the day..wearing clothes that didnt match and werent comfortable, unshowered and greasy, tired, bad breath, stressed out, etc. i almost skipped psychology, which i should have, but waited til my 1:00 break and finally took a shower and put on some real clothes, went for a quick lunch, and made it to math class, but struggled to stay awake.
on the bright side, i got a 91 on my art as experience test, a 100 on my math test (oh my goodness gracious!!), and an A something or other on my child psych test. so things are off to a good start, i guess.

last night, liz enlightened me and neville by informing us that when we peel oranges, we're actually unpeeling them. crazy, huh?
Then Job replied to the LORD :
"I know that you can do all things;
no plan of yours can be thwarted.
You asked, 'Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?'
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
"You said, 'Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.'
My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you.
Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes."

i just watched a really cool documentary called dark days about a group of homeless people that live in new york's subway. it was really enjoyable. i really enjoy documentarys and find myself drawn to them more and more. but it was really really good. what makes it even better is knowing how they made it...here, the director had no previous filming experience whatsoever. he just moved to new york, and felt like learning more about homeless people, and found out about these people in the tunnel, and decided to just hang out with them a lot. he lived with/hung out with them for about 3 months when someone finally said "we should make a movie about this." the director said, why not?, and set out on the mission. went to a camera store and basically had the employees choose a camera for him, had about 2 guys helping him and all the homeless guys were the filming crew. they filmed for a couple years and it took a while to finally get it made, and then they used all the money to get the guys off the streets and get their lives straightened out and into homes and stuff.
so, i loved it, you should check it out.
an interesting article can be read here. while he is not the expert he probably thinks he is, and while he is at times painfully brutal and sarcastic, he is an entertaining writer, and gives us christians a look at what we unfortunately look like to the rest of the world, particularly when it comes to the arts...an area where we should be leading the world, because of our desire to worship our god with our god-given creativity, but for whatever reason, it's the exact opposite. i think i unfortunately agree with a lot of the article, which, i guess is what makes it so sad!...or at least embarassing. at any rate, its an interesting read.

"What makes the stuff so half-assed, so thin, so weak and cumulatively so demoralizing (even to me, a sympathetic journalist who'd secretly love to play the brash contrarian and rate the Left Behind books above Tom Clancy) has nothing to do with faith. The problem is lack of faith. Ark culture is a bad Xerox of the mainstream, not a truly distinctive or separate achievement. Without the courage to lead, it numbly follows, picking up the major media's scraps and gluing them back together with a cross on top." -Mr. Kern

what a day.
for some odd reason i seemed well rested...or maybe my coffee was stronger than usual.
i was in good spirits which is always nice.
it was a beautiful day.
i think my math test went well.
chapel was really great. a students father from india spoke...an amazing man with 3 phd's who does some amazing work in india. he spoke from acts 17 i think on seeing the world as god sees it. he was incredibly passionate and the service was incredibly convicting. when you hear a moving sermon like that on the needs of the world, it is something that makes everything else look so trivial. like...this summer...my boss would get stressed out about fixing ball marks on the greens - little indentations left by golf balls. his life - and consequently my life, for that summer - depended on fixing ball marks for people with too much money who like to chase a little white ball everywhere for fun while in india 24,000 babies are aborted each day and thousands and thousands are dying of hunger the majority of whom do not know christ. yikes! and yet the message so often falls on deaf ears! everyone hates the hunger commercials on tv - and the one commercial criticised people for changing the channel...and while such guilt trips arent always the best reason for people to get involved, it's a perfect example. people dont want to be bothered by these things, we are too distracted and too comfortable.
i dont know...i could go on but i wouldnt get much place. but its a huge burden to bear! the world is so big and the needs are so many, it's hard to know what to do...but i suppose thats where prayer comes in. and a chapel service like that can be so overwhelming and convicting, but once we step out of the doors into our comfortable world again, satan likes to distract us pretty quickly. so thats where prayer for compassion and godliness comes in too, i suppose.
anyway, enough yakking. if you'd like to listen to the service, which i recommend you do, click here, although im not sure if it is working yet.
have good weekends.
and by the way, i suppose i made a pretty big statement on wednesday the 24th, saying that when you have a clear picture fo the fullness of god's grace there is no way you can be apathetic...ive been thinking about this and things havent been as clear as they were in that eureka-revelation moment that i had...im not sure if it's a true statement or not...but the rest of the stuff i said is true, i think. but, just wanted to say, im not sure if i agree with my own statement.
ok goodbye.
i just gave kyle and kyle the musical history of nate shorb. started with the dialtones, complete with the "starting line" video, moved to iron cobra, and then they got bored before i played nate su.
while the dialtones were pretty terrible and laughable nowadays...watching that video reminded me of a lot of good times. iron cobra too. i hated high school, but looking back, im not always sure why, cuz i definitely laughed a lot.
and i think performings in my blood. i miss it. so im still praying that once i get out of school i can find someone to jam with and tour during my summers off. maybe i'll have to move to akron with nate.

irony
last night yoder and i and a nice freshman named chip went to steak and shake.
we ordered a typical steak and shake meal. then yoder says "lets get some more food." my mind said no but my stomach said yes. he said, "you decide." the waitress came. i paniced. before i knew what was happening my mouth was blurting out "i'll have a grilled cheese and bacon, please!" while my mind was yelling, "noooooo!" yoder ordered the double steakburger. chip caved into peer pressure and ordered onion rings.
and it wasnt even satisfying. it was just more food. and boy is my system ever messed up now. i am definitely feeling it. not to mention smelling up the small desk area pretty badly this morning.
i think we learned out lesson.
but they do need steak and shakes in PA.
tonight we had our first small group out in the pouring rain. there's lots of lightning and thunder and yoder suggests meeting outside and i figure he means underneath an overhang or covering of some sort. nope, he definitely meant right out underneath the rain. we got a little wet.
i am still having more and more revelations about god's grace which is cool. i just think so much of the christian community misses it. tonight i was thinking about the many youth group lessons and the many conversations i had with christian friends about being apathetic or complacent or mediocre about god...now i realize that all those conversations emphasized what i was or wasnt doing in my walk with christ...and the remedy to complacency was always reading my bible or "living for god" (whatever i thought that meant at the time) on my own strength. and it all just led to frustration. but now i am realizing that when you have a clear picture of the fullness of god's grace, there is no way you can be apathetic or complacent or mediocre! i dont really know how to explain it more than that...granted, there are some things in your life you can do or not do for god...but in your spiritual walk with christ, once you know grace, im not sure if there is anyway you can be lukewarm. does that make sense? this is all off the top of my head, so perhaps i need to do some more thinking (or explaining?), but....yeah.
the other thing im thinking is how comfortable i let myself be. i tend to think of myself as a thinker which i am happy about...but my anti-confrontational personality leads me to only talk to people i know will agree with me. it is always encouraging to share with someone you connect with, someone on the same level, but i guess i must admit its not healthy when that's ALL you do. for example, i wont talk to my roommate about my anti-war leanings [let me reiterate im not anti-war...(i just lean that way)], i dont want to talk to calvinists or armenians about my middle of the road stance, etc etc etc. im realizing thats pretty lame. and cowardly. and it needs to change. but at this point i dont think i'll be making any effort to change it. cuz im lazy and anti-confrontational. but. we'll see. or the other thing is, i'll listen to people's point of view, but wont really explain how i completely disagree with them...part of its fear of confrontation...most of it is im really not good at expressing my thoughts verbally...but its all pretty cowardly i guess.
thanks for reading. email if you'd like to discuss. goodbye.

i am considering switching this over to livejournal. reason 1: it looks like more fun. reason 2: it's not called "blog." we'll see.
i was just thinking about the big anthrax scare after 9/11...and the y2k bug scare...and all the other things people overreact about...and i laughed...and thought to myself, "people are really ridiculously stupid."
kyle and i have begun feeding my fish right out of our fingers. kyle attempted it first without my knowing. he told me and i have followed. it's pretty awesome. kinda scary though...having a siamese fighting fish attack your fingers. he'll even jump out of the water a little bit for it. it's really a sight to see.
i know many of you have concerned about whether to stop drinking milk or not after my post about child psych class. thanks to mr. clutcher, read this to know you can keep drinking milk.
see? who knew jamin's father read my blog?!? i sure didn't. this is why you all need to participate in the game a few posts down. as far as i know, only noah and jared read my blog.

i really really really hate the word "blog."
i guess its just one of those nights where the 625 miles/11 hours is just plain tough. not depressing or lonely or anything...just plain tough.

Tuesday, September 23, 2003

the nice folks at blogger got some things worked out, but the template is still kinda screwed up and annoying. we'll see if i can slowly get the quirks worked out. if you are an html pro and can offer some help, please do, cuz i dont have the time necessary to figure out how to fix all the little annoying details! (in particular, the archive stuff on the left, and the annoying ":: ::" in between posts.)
i have a bad habit of finishing everything for the night and right before going to bed walking down the hall to find someone to talk to. its times like these when i stumble into yoder's room, lay on his couch, and talk for two hours until 2:30 in the morning. its no good. well, i guess it's some good, cuz its nice, all in all, but i sure could use the sleep.
my blog template is messed up and you cant read this but im posting anyway.
rebel without a cause was mostly a success. people were able to discuss afterwards and let everyone know how insightful and artsy fartsy they are and everyone was impressed with everyone. and the root beer floats were good.
i was stumped on a math proof but i put my mind to it and went for it and got down and broke a sweat and i figured it out. (that was a saved by the bell reference)
i guess i never made it very clear that it was a good weekend. the wedding was great and fun. a good time all around.
ive been told lots of people read my blog. it baffles me.
lets play a game. if you read this post, you have to sign your name in the comments. i dont care if youre a stranger. sign it anyway. it'll be fun. and it will make me feel secure. that was sarcasm. although i guess it's partially true.
ok bye.
for some reason my template isnt working and i cant change the band of the ______. let it be known that the band of the _________ is mates of state because their music is darn catchy and they are playing here next week. WOO.

today in child psychology, a girl raised her hand to give an example of something. she ended up saying that milk isnt actually good for your body, that it doesnt do anything for you or could even be bad for you, but everyone drinks it anyway cuz they are told it is good for you. this got the entire class in a tizzy, everyone was whispering and muttering, and one girl finally spoke up from across the room and said "thats not true!!!!! its good for your bones!!!!" the first girl, with that semi-arrogance tone typical of the people that somehow know the underground secrets, said, "no! actually, it has so much protein, that it counteracts the calcium and doesnt do anything! research it!!!!!" this got everyone riled and things were escalating when the professor finally intervened and got things back on track.
i just laughed. first, this girl was so atimate about milk actually being bad for you and everyone being too ignorant to realize this. second, the rest of the class was fractically freaking out by this statement that was threatening what they had been taught since kindergarten. it was really quite funny.
so, as far as i know, milk does a body good...plenty of celebrities have told me that much. if you find some research that says otherwise, let me know. and if you have any idea how it relates to child psychology, fill me in there, too.
today is mostly cold and rainy and dreary...but there is a linger in the air that tells autumn is coming which is exciting.
i am drained and stressed from the weekend. ive just been burdened with a lot and it is frustrating and makes me not want to work or do anything in general...but it also tells me god's working in my heart which is pretty exciting.
ifc shows rebel without a cause tonight. i guess that's exciting, but i dont really have the time to go, but have to anyway. all part of it, i suppose.
just took an art as experience test and it was beyond difficult. life goes on now that its over, though.
gotta go take a math quiz now before class and a psych quiz a little later on.
you dont need to know all this.
sorry for wasting your time.
have a good day.

(no....read it again.)

When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it. Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God. Ecc. 5:4,5,7

Two things I ask of you, O LORD ;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, 'Who is the LORD ?'
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God. Prov. 30:7-9

jamin wants me to tell cyberspace about his adventures with icy hot tonight. if you really want to know, email jamin_clutcher@tayloru.edu .
the boys and i are crashing ray and alex's house...it's been enjoyable thus far.
the funeral this morning was...well...a funeral. i dont know what to think of it all. but i sure cant imagine what nate is going through.
we ate at a place called chipotle...it was incredible and i recommend you seek one out and eat there.
we're waiting for just the right time to go a mcdonalds that has a 2 story spiraly slide. we'll probably get kicked out of the play place in no time...but by the looks of this slide, it will be well, well worth it.
nate wrote a song for the recessional of his wedding and it sounds great. needless to say, i miss him.
ray and alex have a cat and we've been giving a hard time cuz we dont like him. but then we found out his name is captain jack, and that made him a little bit cooler.
got the tuxes. they fit well and look nice.
akron is a great place. i could handle living here.
so, this hurricane, huh?
that's about all from ohio for now.
keep us - more specifically, nate - in your prayers.

today in my first class, our teacher informed us that she wasnt going to say we werent allowed to wear flip flops to class, but she was going to ask us to please keep our shoes on in order to practice professionalism. she elaborated quite a bit and was extremely serious.
i'll be honest, it was hard to keep from laughing.
on another note, 2 more days until i see the woman of my dreams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hooray!
we're about to leave to make the trek across ohio. have good weekends.
what i've been trying to express for years...i suppose i havent looked hard enough

Tuesday, September 16, 2003

the days are getting nutser and nutser.
tonight im scrambling to get all my work done.
tomorrow night i leave for akron ohio, to be at dr. su's funeral on thursday and nate's wedding on saturday and help out with everything in between.
ester drang, a former "band of the __________" on the left of the computer screen (which reminds me, its about time i change that), is coming to taylor and i am quite pleased.
holy moly what a day. im bursting at the seams. im dumbfounded. i dont know where to go or how to start or what but ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

i see my bowling for columbine/9-11 post got deleted for some odd reason. its a bummer cuz that was one of the first purposefull posts in a while.
last night we had a floor retreat which was enjoyable.
today i went to the ball state university art museum with jesse for a class, and it was really enjoyable. i felt real artsy fartsy.
tonight im working the graveyard shift at the front desk (10-1).
ive been kinda annoyed with this whole blog thing for some reason lately...so if you dont hear from me for a while, that's why.
have a good sabbath day.

Friday, September 12, 2003

no amount of coffee or soda can save me today. instead, it's just making me have to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes.

Thursday, September 11, 2003

last night i stayed up and watched bowling for columbine with yoder and neville. it was an ironic time to watch it, being the anniversary of sept. 11th and all. all in all, i thought it was good....t

granted, reading 70 children's books is a laborious task...but there is no doubt that 2 and 3 page chapters are a glorious, glorious thing indeed.
the DC has been serving these new grilled cheese tomato pesto sandwhiches...and they are absolutely incredible! but everyone is either scared of the word pesto, or else they get it and bite into it and find that it's green, and they are scared to death and act like picky 5 year old eaters and whine and complain.....and then pass the sandwhich to me. always room for one more, i guess.

Away Message from NERDVOMMIT: sign of the apocolypse #457: dale pittner just said school will pay off.
iLuvPatBenetar: uh just a note shorb, i don't really think school will pay off, but as a friend i have to tell you that so you continue your education and don't end up like me. don't be fooled into thinking i've actually become a responsible member of society.
iLuvPatBenetar: but it may pay off
iLuvPatBenetar: so go get 'em tiger
it's 2:45...yoder talks too much and keeps me up late. but it's really quite nice i guess.
kyle just whispered something in his sleep...i couldnt understand what he said but it was really really spooky...like something straight out of a horror movie.
jared and i had our first band practice tonight. but the kid that knows how to write songs didnt show up. so we didnt actually practice much. we just acted like little girls. which is pretty much the norm for us. im tired. goodnight.

Monday, September 08, 2003

Honestly! im learning how to write manuscript all over again! for the love of all that is good! can't someone else teach kids how to write?!?
yesterday i ate at quizno's for the first time and it was the best food i've had in a very long time.
i also went to lots of record shops and was tempted on numerous occasions, but i resisted.
my day is over and im blaring brandtson to celebrate.
i will now tell you about my classes:
my 8 and 9 o'clock classes are junior el ed classes and they are pretty enjoyable. extremely busy and somewhat frustrating because of that, but all in all, not bad.
my 11 o'clock is child psych, which is an enjoyable subject. my prof is a very smiley man - he has this really big grin fixed to his face - so big that it impairs his speech. i wish i was that happy.
my 12 o'clock is an annoying gen ed called arts as experience. it is a waste of time, and reminds me way too much of high school. it's bearable, though. it's taught by a tiny little woman with a speech impediment. she can't pronounce her r's, and has a mousey little voice. it's hard to sit through her lecture without laughing.
my 2 o'clock is trans math, and it's the worst class ever. the teacher teaches it in the same convoluted, confusing, cluttered way that his mind works, and probably the same convoluted, confusing, cluttered way his office is organized. my stomach is in knots from the very moment i wake up knowing that i have to go to that class in the afternoon. it's simply dreadful.
this afternoon i went to the library to read and i checked out some books: frog and toad are friends, the whipping boy, and the mouse and the motorcycle. hooray.
i have to write a children's book, if you have any suggestions, please suggest. i really want to write a story along the lines of unwed sailor's the marionette and the music box, pretty much cuz it's the story of my life, but i know whatever i write will turn out exactly like their book. we'll see.
im in a good mood now that my day is over.
god loves me and it's a nice feeling. i hope you're experiencing the same.

this (past) week in music
finally started listening to the postal service. a lot of fun and really really good. ben gibbard is the bomb diggidy, his lyrics and melodies are amazing, but my only complaint is they all have an extremely similar flow to them. i guess that's pretty true to any singer songwriter though. i dont know what im saying.
mates of state is making a visit at taylor this month, so i figured i'd better start listening to them. they are a lot of fun as well. ingenious. contagious. beautiful. quirky. all at the same time. cant wait to see them.
josh garrels played in the union last night to a huge crowd. and the crowd was really attentive while he played - which is pretty rare for popular taylor kids. and he was selling cds like extra hot hot cakes. i was really happy for him. and he's just so dang good i decided to buy his cd too, and i am not disappointed. urban-funk-folk-hip-hop-with-extra-soul-and-a-smooth-as-butter-voice. it's wonderful.
i just gave a listen to breaking pangaea's new ep, and was extremely disappointed. they think they're the emo metallica or something. thanks but no thanks. and im bummed cuz i really like them.
wahoo.

Saturday, September 06, 2003

so, i've blown it already. i need to read a chapter in a book on reserve in the library. the library isnt open on sundays. and it closes at 10:00 tonight. which is when i get off work. so im off to a good start.
a kid is...like...learning how to play the piano in our lobby. i wouldnt care if a kid was good and he wanted to play a little bit. but save the annoying pounding for somewhere else. i mean, really. what were they thinking when they put a piano in the lobby? the times we do singing around the piano as a dorm are rare, and no one wants to hear someone practicing any other time. especially if they're trying to watch espn, or study, as in fact 2 guys are doing.
im such a grumpy old man.
whats going on.
i guess i havent told you folks in cyberspace about my job. i work at the front desk of my dorm. and that's where im at tonight from 6-10. good times.
i started reading the catcher in the rye (in all my spare time) tonight. i kinda carry it around and it makes me look really literary and cool. if people only knew the truth.
the guy that worked before me basically didnt do a thing, so i actually have some work to do. after that, i'll be trying to finish some homework.
it's been a mellow, kinda crabby day. yesterday morning i was really content and excited about god...and i think satan's working on that pretty good. keep on truckin', i suppose.

"I remember when I was in college. We would come back to our rooms and a woman would be there, cleaning our rooms and making our beds. We had a name for these women in the Harvard of the 1950s. We called them biddies.
We never knew the name of the woman who did this for us because she was just our biddy. She cleaned up after us. And if we were very thoughtful, some days we might thank her, but I don't want to remember how many times we never thanked her. And I don't want to remember how many times we had a smashed beer bottle or two in the fireplace, knowing that she woudl clean up after us. After all, she was being paid to do that. We gave her a big tip at Christmas time. Never "thank you" or "please." Never any conversation.
At the same time, fo course, we were taking courses. Courses, for instance, in psychology, where we would learn about empathy. You would get an A in a course by writing for a whole hour on empathy. But I couldn't tell you the biddy's name. We weren't asked to do that, because that wasn't part of the curriculum, core or otherwise. It still isn't. I watch my children reading books by great philosphers and I wonder. How can one teach so that what one is teaching engages with a life?"

ive finally found someone who agrees with me. why is it so hard for people, in particular, college-age-GROWN-men, even more in particular, college-age-grown-CHRISTIAN-men, to be respectful?
the phone rings.
me: hello?
woman: is mr. or mrs. shorb there?
me: ummm, this is mr. shorb.
woman: hello, this is so-and-so from such-and-such. im calling because you contacted us about a bedwetting problem for a 5-year-old of yours?
me: *chuckle* well, ACTUALLY, i am a college student and chances are this was a prank played on me by one of my friends.
woman: *chuckle* ok, thank you.
me: do you get that a lot?
woman: yes...yes, we do.
me: im not surprised. sorry about that, have a good night.
it wasnt so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. you let the world, which doesnt know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. you filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience. we all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. its a wonder god didnt lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. he took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in CHrist! He did all this on his own, with no help from us! Then he picked us up and set us down in high heave in company with Jesus, our Messiah.
Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindess upon us in CHrist Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. it's gods gift from start to finish! we dont play the major role. if we did, we'd probably go around bragging that we'd done the whole thing! no, we neither make nor save ourselves. god does both the making and the saving. he creates each of us by christ jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten read for us to do, work we had better be doing.

the guys on the floor played farkle tonight, which is a large game of rock/paper/scissors, where the loser has to shave either his head or his legs. it got down to a freshman and yoder. now, yoder is a 5'4" plump fellow with lots of body hair including the martin-van-buren-sideburns-connecting-to-the-mustache facial hair. he's had this since his freshman year in high school. thus, we made an exception for him, or perhaps forced him, to shave his face. and he did. and he's got the cutest little baby face now.
Went to a show last night. Songs:ohia was the band. The venue was awesome. An old firehouse, and the owner writes grant proposals and gets grants to keep the place absolutely free. Ingenious. The show was…ok…I think I really needed to be familiar with the music to enjoy it. The music was good, but I just wasn’t into it. Plus the guitar player was really odd looking, I guess just not like I expected, and the drummer looked like an ugly guy on campus who is always making out with his girlfriend, so those circumstances were distracting. But there was a guy who was playing the steel slide guitar thinger, and man oh man could he ever make that thing sing. He was really great. So, the concert was ok, but the company was nice and fun. And on the way home we passed a speedway gas station, and the s and the d weren’t lit up in the sign, and it said “pee way.” And it was absolutely hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. I laughed. A lot.
So what’s this IFC business? You’ll hear the acronym a lot this year. It stands for the integration of faith and culture, it’s a cabinet im on, and we plan concerts and movies and speakers and artists and authors for the campus. Here’s part of a rough draft of an article that will be published and distributed over campus soon:

“…Broadly, we observed two responses to pop culture by the students at taylor. One response was cavalier: the person watched and listened and consumed whatever he or she wanted, without thought or regard for what any of it meant. The second response was fearful: the person only watched, listened, and consumed Christian media and pop culture, because that media had been designated “safe” by whomever labeled it “Christian”: everything else was off-limits. Both of these are unthinking responses. Unfortunately, they’re also both responses that are more often than not promoted by both “secular” and “religious” American culture, which encourages people to be myopic, passive, and scared. So there needed to be a third way, one which contributes to the development of individuals who are judicious, discerning, and intentional about the choices they make; moreover, this third way had to come from a Christ-centered perspective, in view of his grace, or we were only substituting one sort of legalistic parameters for another.
Here at IFC, we believe music, words, and images contain meaning and that they can tell us something about ourselves, our culture, and our God. We embrace the good and unchanging character of God, and we recognize that He has left indelible marks of Himself all over creation. We see beauty, truth, and goodness wherever it happens to be found – in a sanctuary, at a rock show, in a homeless shelter, on HBO, in salvation testimonies, at a poetry reading – as some of these marks. And we view the grit, pain, and sin of this world as something to be mourned over but not ignored, because we know that in order to understand light, one first must know darkness.”

Enough said, I suppose. That’s IFC.
Thoughts on pursuing a career in contemporary Christian music (inspired by several peers doing such, and several advertisements for CCM schools):

If your purposes in pursuing a music career are:
- encouraging and edifying the church
….that’s actually the only reason I can think of now that im typing this…
Then go ahead and pursue a career in the “Christian market” not allowing your mission to be tainted by greed, pride, the love of money, fame, false witness, etc. if you cannot withstand these temptations, then don’t pursue said career.

If your purposes in pursuing a music career are:
- evangelism
- the love of art
- money
- fame
- career
- etc
Then pursue a career in the general market. Why?
- evangelism: this may seem surprising at first. Christ says several times it’s not the healthy that need a doctor, but the sick. The Christian industry contains very few “sick” people. And if you DO want to reach the healthy people, see the last statemtent about encouraging and edifying the church.
- The love of art: I’m treading the fine line of my strong feelings here…but…let’s just say…well…nevermind, I’m gonna skip that. that could be debatable.
- The rest of the purposes: let’s face it. It’s easier to be successful in the Christian market because, unfortunately, not only is the caliber of music not as high, but many Christians judge art by how many times the word “jesus” is said on the record, rather than artistic merit. But I think it should be obvious that money and fame should not be reasons to use Christian themes in your music. Maybe im wrong, but I think Christ kicking the merchants out of the temple could be a parallel. what im saying is, dont pursue a career in the christian industry just because it's easier to "make it." that's not being true to yourself and it's being misleading to the christians shopping in the christian industry.

While I think CCM as a whole is incredibly lame for several reasons, and it just plain irritates me most of the time, these thoughts are as unbiased as possible. and since these thoughts are unbiased as possible, dont let my bias bias you when you read them. did that make sense?
And pursuing a career in the general market…if you’re a committed Christian, I would think it would be natural to sing about Christ. That definitely doesn’t mean every song has to, and it definitely doesn’t mean the songs that don’t aren’t glorifying to Christ. There’s more to this, but I’ll leave it at that.
Above all, do whatever you do with excellence. Don’t write a top 40 hit. Write something different. Unique. God gave you creativity. Use it.
And im not expressing myself nearly as well as I’d like. But what else is new. But this is the first I’ve actually tried, so I guess it’s a start.
i have a lot to post, but as you know, things arent cooperating. so i am going to write posts elsewhere and save them, and will work on posting them. this will mean you'll have a lot to read over a lot of time, or, it will all come in one big chunk when the network decides to work. we'll see. bear with me.

you guys are really missing out on my life here.
and it's irritating me.
what a waste of time.

ive tried 2 times in a row to post now...the first a beautifully written, authentic, as-good-as-they-come post...the second a lame attempt to recreate that...and both have been lost in cyberspace because of taylor's problematic network. i will now abandon said post, and hope that what i said will surface in future posts. i apologize for the inconvenience, as i know all of you are deeply inconvenienced by this occurrence. this is all nonsense. goodbye.
after writing about my personality battle, i decided to take a very reliable personality test i found from the little thing that pops up when you sign onto AIM. i scored an 8.

6-10: You’ve struck the perfect balance between hanging out with people and hanging out with yourself. Don’t let anyone ever tell you differently.

so i guess they tend to think im alright. hooray.
most guys you know try to save the fun for later on in the year, and break themselves in easy. here at taylor, we go straight to it, and hit the fun straight on. tonight we had probably the most fun we'll have all semester...we used nair to remove all of yoder's back hair. seriously folks, that stuff should be illegal. but his back is silky smooth now.
kyle and i are beginning to think my narcolepsy is cause for concern. i dont know why now all of a sudden i finally am thinking its a problem, but lets face it, requiring 10 or more hours of sleep a night isnt normal, not to mention it just isnt practical. i would say that i have acute narcolepsy, but then i remember that acute means severe, but who wouldve thought that? acute is supposed to mean tiny little cute, like an acute angle..its not supposed to mean on your deathbed severe. whatever.
happy labor day. it's 2:08 in the morning and i just woke up from watching a movie and im kinda delirious.

ok, i'll be honest, i wrote this post at 2:08 on sunday night and it was pretty funny but blogger messed it all up and wouldnt let me fix it and now its monday morning and im trying to recreate the madness and it just isnt there. but who reads this anyway. i'll shut up now. im an idiot.
