sweet home
im home. there's something different about home. door knobs are lower. the carpet is soft. the cinder block walls are gone. the bathroom is less public. the doors are lighter. the shower head is really low and i have to bend over to wash my hair. and it's all wonderful.

fox is tops
i'll admit. im addicted to joe millionaire. something gives me pleasure in seeing the evil schemes of women revealed.
there's this certain girl, who is, incidentally, a hoosier. she calls herself "mojo" which makes her that much more annoying. well, here's what i had to say before the show as an away message:
"if joe millionaire doesn't kick "mojo" off the show tonight i'm gonna smash a tv or two. and gouge my eyes out. and pour lemon juice and ketchup into my eye sockets. and scream. a lot. i hate that girl."
i am pleased to say no tv's were smashed, and i still have my precious eyes. she was kicked off. if you dont watch the show, you have no idea how good this news is. here's what another friend had to say:
Cerafina7: so he kicked her off
Cerafina7: i've seen about five minutes of the show
Cerafina7: that girl made me want to chew my own eyeballs out of my head
Cerafina7: hallelujah
so, its the general consensus. even someone i dont know IM'd me and told me they were with me on the away message. i mean, she wears ugly hats. and that about all she wears. and she thinks shes hot. and for the love of all that is human and good, she calls herself mojo. thank you, fox, for getting rid of her.
now i'm rooting for zora. she's the underdog. she's modest. she's not a tramp. she's not flirtatious. etc. she's respectable. go zora.
and for goodness sake, i just cant wait til he drops the bomb and breaks the news.
and thats all i have to say. goodnight.

highway robbery
i only have to buy books for 3 classes, you'd think i could handle that...but these prices are out of control. i dont know why im not majoring in book-making..these guys are millionaires...taking advantage of poor college students. im putting books up for sale and shopping for the best deals...its quite the strategic process. i'll let you know how i make out...one thing's for sure, i am definitely not paying $110 for a biology book.

good riddance super bowl sunday
another one has come and gone. it was a pretty disappointing one at that.
the only good thing about super bowl sunday is the food. our dorm had a good cookout. that was nice.
the game was terrible.
the commercials were quite disappointing this year, too. although it was fun to see mxpx in a diet pepsi commercial and hear mogwai on a levis commercial.
it is pretty sad to see what super bowl sunday has done to our country, really. nobody cares about football, including myself...yet somehow...for some reason...millions and millions of people drop anything and everything and put their lives on hold to watch a stupid football game. and companies are spending 2.2 million dollars for a 30 second advertisement. pretty ridiculous when it all comes down to it. 4 hours of my life wasted...and im sure i'll do it again next year.

it snowed a lot last night. maybe 5 or 6 inches even. its still snowing. for some reason, this has been the first snow where ive kind of enjoyed it..im not sure why. it had the surprise element, where i didnt know it was coming, and its not too cold, and theres that little bit of a "snowed in" feel. whatever.
i dont know when i fell asleep this afternoon, but i think i slept for at least 3 and a half hours. ive been quite fatigued lately.
now im trying to finish my homework before the big super bowl party. i think i want the raiders to win, but who really cares?

the show was interesting last night. calibretto is one of those silly obnoxious jr. high youth group bands. so it was about 5 taylor students and 50 million jr. highers. it brought ray and i back to our high school days. the pancakes were delicious. watching the fight is an awesome band, i think. they right pretty mature, creative music...they have great voices...and lucious harmonies reminiscient (sp?) of simon and garfunkle. i love it.
yet another sign of the apocolypse: i worked out today, for what i think was the first time in my life. bear made me. bear and su and ray and i are all getting pretty pudgy, and so they roped me into working out with them, excpet that su and ray ditched us. losers. and just last night i came to the conclusion that i was facing the facts and just getting really fat. im not disciplined enought to work out and get skinny, and this awkward stage of trying to look skinny but being quite pudgy just isnt working. so, either im giving up and getting fat or giving in to bear and the guys and working out. we'll see.

friday night plans
calibretto is playing here tonight with IWU rock heroes watching the fight. i am working for it. calibretto is fun, but kind of obnoxious and not my favorite. my friend jared is making free pancakes for everyone that comes - what a goof ball. so it should be a fun night all in all...getting paid to eat pancakes and listen to some enjoyable music.
i'll talk more about the music scene later.
good thing its the weekend. only 3 days of j-term left...hard to believe. i cant decide if ive enjoyed jterm or not. an enjoyable jterm is like.....the unattainable holy grail or something. all of first semester you say "i cant wait for jterm...we can do this over jterm...and that...and this...and we work really hard in our class...and read lots of books in our free time...and build a coffee table to suspend from the ceiling...and take a road trip to canada." and then jterm comes, and you turn into this lazy zombie. doing absolutely nothing all day except for watching 24 episodes of 24 and playing video games. and you just get so tired of it and sick of it and its really not as great as you think it is. hmmf.
anyway, time to go work.

i don't like it when people are fake. i like it better when i can trust people. i like it better when people tell me to my face they like me and then they go behind my back and still say they like me. or if they say they hate me to my face and behind my back too. i dont care if you like me or hate me, just dont be a faker. if you catch me being fake, please tell me.

childhood delights rediscovered, bargain hunting, lack of self respect
+i have never been much of a peanut butter and jelly fan. i think i was turned off to it as a child, im not sure why. once the pbj made it to lunch time, the jelly was crystalized, and it just wasnt very appetizing, i guess. however, more recently, i have tried it, and my eyes have been opened. i am definitely on a big kick lately. pbj is one of the greatest things known to man. i love it.
+i bought a knit hat tonight at wal mart. 96 cents. i pass this recommendation on to you.
+so tonight was the game at indiana weslyan. we dominated, but thats not why i am mentioning this. iwu has male cheerleaders. basically, since they dont have a football team, many football players become cheerleaders and get big bucks for it. i will be the first to admit they do some pretty amazing stuff - guys and girls. i am impressed, and its stuff i obviously could never do myself. but man, these guys are cheerleaders. honestly. you know they have to just think to themselves every now and then... "i am a cheerleader." they just wake up in the morning, look themselves in the mirror, and say, "what have i done? what am i doing? i am a cheerleader." its a realization i know i could never face. for real...what are they thinking?
+on the topic of basketball, i will say that my new favorite heckles are the following:
"you're not even remotely good at basketball."
and the point blank, might as well get this out in the open, honesty stings approach:
"you're terrible!"

the rest of my racism thoughts
where do i start...
probably the most-heard argument from whites is the following: "i'm not racist...i don't own slaves, and it's not my fault white people owned slaves in early america..." this is true. BUT. racism is not just about owning slaves. racism isnt even just about hate crimes. instead, racism is a lack of compassion for minorities. it's an apathetic attitude, and an unwillingness to identify with the past. its a reluctance to admit that blacks are not given the same opportunities as whites...a reluctance to admit they do not live in the same America whites do.
really, it all comes down to compassion. it is a proven fact that blacks are still discriminated against today. because of all the crap thats happened in the past and attitudes that are still held, they cannot pull ahead...at least not easily. they are not given the same opportunities. and whites need to acknowledge this and sympathize with this. it's not pity...but rather putting yoruself in someone elses shoes and truly feeling for them and hurting with them. its admiting that we cant change the past but we are sorry for it even though we may not have had anything to do with it...its compassion.
by saying slavery isnt our fault, we are asking blacks to ignore a terrible heritage and mistreatment that occurs even today. we need to "fess up" and accept the fact that blacks WERE and ARE mistreated, and it was OUR race.
now. i will agree that sometimes blacks do take things to extremes...and also, some may unfortunately abuse racism like the situation jamin talked about in his comments. i have said in the past, perhaps ignorantly, perhaps not, that blacks think all whites are racist and women think all men are sexist. this may not be exactly true, but it does bring up the point that minorities need to do their part too. there is a meeting halfway that needs to take place. we, the majority, need to be compassionate and educated, while the minority needs to refrain from pointing fingers and feeling sorry for themselves. there definitely needs to be a meeting point...racism will not be eliminated until both sides do their parts. unfortunately there are ignorant african americans that will not let go of the grudge...and unfortunately there are ignorant whites that either proceed with hate crimes or are apathetic in general....both sides have their bad apples.
with all this said...i will agree with jamin on two more points....
racism is obviously not held to only black people. my comments are not meant to be targeted to them alone, but rather to all minorities. nothing makes me more sick than a floormate who says "we shouldve just bombed the crap out of afghanistan a long time ago. all of them suck...we should teach them a lesson...blah blah blah..." i dont know. you know what i mean. yeah bin laden's done a lot of crap...but you would think christians would take the time to get their heads out of their buttoxes and start praying for the guy rather than wanting to personally blow his head off. i digress...
also...and this a somewhat convicting point...education should not be saved for MLK day and black history month. it should be a constant thing...something we strive for. not just racism...but war...the oppression of the poor...etc. i'll be the first to admit i am incredibly pathetic on this side of things. i'll be the first to admit it's hard to care when you're a comfortable american at a rich christian school. but maybe thats all the more reason to care. furthermore, we need to DO something about it. im pretty convicted when i hear about my friends going on anti-war marches and stuff...granted, i dont know what i think about anti-war stuff, but, nonetheless...i am pretty pathetic when it comes to acting on anything i believe in....
anyway, i've said enough. hope this explains myself a little bit better than what i said the other day.
happy martin luther king jr. day...let me know if i'm right or wrong.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." -MLK
"We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people." -MLK
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction....The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation." -MLK
"Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true." -MLK
"I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe you have sent me....that they may be one as we are one...May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." -Jesus' prayer from John 18:20-23
hold on. speaking of this last verse...for all the christian readers...as this verse shows...in the words of a friend, "racism is part of the FULL gospel...it is not extra credit"...it is part of God's will! so....take all this to heart...i guess...thats what im trying to say....
ive said more than enough...sorry.

h to the izzo v to the izzay fo shizzle my nizzle something something
what i didnt mention about bowling last night was that it was laser light bowling. this includes exciting things like disco balls and obnoxiously loud music. this can be fun although it severely inhibits talking, hearing, fellowship, etc. but here's my point...
all night long, annoying radio-hit mtv hip hop was playing. in my eclecticness, i try to keep an open mind towards hip-hop. im never the little close minded brat that says "hip-hop is NOT music! it's crap!" granted, i dont like the stuff, and there are times i gently make that known, but all in all i try to keep an open mind and not be a condescending jerk.
but man...after 3 hours of it last night...hip-hop is terrible. there's no way around it. i dont understand how these guys - guys with the most annoying raspy voices shouting either jibberish at insanely high speeds or about how hot it is which permits taking off all your clothes - can make millions of dollars off this stuff!
im sorry. but this music is terrible. and annoying. no reason to hide the truth any longer.
on another note...i still have more racism comments coming...which, interestingly enough, my disdain for hip-hop has nothing to do with the complexion of those performing it. i dont like eminem, either.
on another note..i have an overnight tonight. and its a football player. come on people..why are they thinking sticking a football player with ME?

i'm a racist.
this morning, world lit brought on one of my soapboxes. so you get to hear about it.
on MLK day, taylor has a lot of different seminars on different things...on the civil rights movement...black history...etc. there are no classes, just chapel and these seminars. its a pretty beneficial day in my mind.
unfortunately, it is pretty apparent that the majority of taylor's campus views it as just another day off...instead of enlightening ourselves, we do "better" things like the usual naps, video games, and movies.
this morning our prof in world lit told us we had an opportunity for extra credit if we attend 2 seminars and write a 2 page essay on the theme of reconciliation and what we learned. this sounded tempting to most students, but man...they'd have to give up their day off. this brought on 20 questions about what counted as a "seminar" and what didnt. read the following sarcastic quotes in the most whiniest voices possible:
"does chapel count as a seminar?" no you idiot, it's mandatory anyway, go and enjoy it.
"does vespers count on sunday night?" no, quit trying to free up your day off.
"if i sleep all day instead and dream of martin luther king, does that count?"
"if i send someone an MLK day e-card, does that count?"
"can i just write the essay?"
"well if none of this counts...just how much is this extra credit worth?"
come on people. you're an affluent white kid who went to school with all white people in a white neighborhood and now you go to an all white college in the middle of nowhere in a state known for racism right next to a town where the KKK supposedly originated. you can say you arent racist all you want but the truth is, in this country, you pretty much cant be a white person who isnt racist, at least subconsciously.
ok, im not expressing myself very well tonight...but im just trying to say this...forget the extra credit...get off your lazy selfish butt and educate yourself. step out of your shoes for a day. learn something. enlighten yourself. you're a selfish white kid that doesnt even know what racism is anymore because our country has warped it so much. if your school doesnt offer seminars, go online and read some of MLK's stuff...whatever...just dont let the day go by without a thought. and please dont say this day is just for african americans...because us white folk need it more than they do.
and i by no means think im perfect in this area at all...im a subconcious racist and it kills me...but i know that i wont be sleeping on monday...and i wont be awake just because of the extra credit...
...but in the end i guess that doesnt make me any better than the next guy.
i'll dig up some quotes one of these days.

Entertaining Quotes Said On Man vs. Beast
+"No, I've never competed against a beast before, just really big men."
+"The orangatan is unfazed, Teetsunami is exhausted!"
+"I visualize myself as a cheetah, these beasts are gonna be a meal for me tonight!"
+"In order to win, Crawford must get off to a good start and keep his stride. In order for the zebra to win, it must stay focused, and realize it's a race. Crawford is the only one here that really knows what the heck is going on."
+"And the zebra gives a little buck there at the end to say 'In your face Shawn Crawford!'"
+"What can I say, I got beat by a zebra."
+"CAN YOU BEAT THE BEAST?"....."Yeah, it's just a wannabe human."
+"I think this chimpanzee's got an attitude problem...He's not showing me much respect."
+"An epic battle that will boggle the mind...2 DC-10's, an 8,800 pound elephant, and 44 little people."
+(with sarcastic inflection) "Ohh, yeah, I thought you guys (the midgets) definitely had it."

another day of j-term
so i traded my sore throat for a bad head-cold and diarrhea. just when i thought it couldnt get any worse.
i had to give a tour today. it was my first tour in a long time with a partner ive never been with before. it was rusty to say the least. i was really spacey and out of it and i think i mumbled a lot and it was actually kinda funny.
we showed the girls the recital hall and there were 2 people nearly making out at the piano on stage. ive seen this couple in there before. he plays piano for her or something..its like lucy and schroder from peanuts. he lulls her in with his music and then they hold each other and its funny. anyway, we opened the doors and there they were...they didnt hear us...and we went on with the tour.
it snowed last night. its kinda nice. at least theres reason for it being cold as an ice box in antarctica now.
coldplay is a good band.
we started our one on one tournament in basketball class today. i worked my way up to slot 3 in the B ladder...i think i can make it to slot 1. but thats not much of an accomplishment...cuz im in the crappy bracket. 2 of my 3 opponents today were girls...one of them was about half my size. i suppose i'd sound a lot better if i wouldnt tell you that.
thats all.

ahhh, the weekend
this weekend, thus far, has been incredibly boring yet quite enjoyable at the same time.
first off, let me say this. forget everything i said about top albums of 2002...maybe it's just a current kick of mine...but brandtson's dial in sounds is like the top album of all time. period.
last night yoder and i discovered the masterpiece that is 24. for those of you who are as out of the loop as i was...24 is a tv show, that im guessing was on HBO or something, i dont know...every episode is an hour long and happens in real time. the first is 12:00am-1:00am, the second 1-2, etc. yoder got this DVD set for christmas...he had never heard of it, and his parents just heard it was good and they got it for him. listen up people. unless you want to waste 24 hours of your life, DO NOT watch the first episode of this. once you start you cant stop...it's one giant string of to be continued's...it's more addicting than heroine and chocolate. (mom, i know nothing firsthand about the addictiveness of heroine.) so, im pretty mad at myself...cuz now 24 hours of my life is gonna go down the drain. at least it's during j-term and not a regular semester. we watched 4 episodes in a row last night. the makers of this thing are a genius. you dont have to watch every single episode of "friends" to know whats going on. but you cant miss a single hour of 24.
nate and i rocked out last night. im pretty sure the entire building of samuel morris could hear us playing at 12:00.
i was thinking of some insightful stuff to say, and i dont remember any of it anymore. ah well.
have a great weekend.

it's friday
this week has been the slowest week of my life. i mean, come on.
the show was pretty good last night. afraid of falling - some friends of mine - opened up. it was their first show ever. despite some typical first show problems, they were really great. brandtson was great. their set was wayyy too short though and they didnt play many of the songs i was hoping for. the new songs sound great. they are really nice guys, too...they seem really shy and kind of "cold" if you will, but once you get them talking a little bit they are super nice and really polite. i think they are probably a great witness out on the road. and they just plain rock. whatever. plus they make me feel better cuz they are kinda pudgy and they still wear tight shirts. mom, if they can pull it off, i can too. :) although, they are short and pudgy and im tall and pudgy and that makes a big difference.
this morning i didnt turn off my alarm clock after hitting the snooze button. i came back from the shower to find it had been going off for something like 13 minutes or so. kyle and my prospective student werent too happy with me.
i took a long nap this afternoon. it was nice.
basketball game tomorrow. woop woop.
thats about all i guess. whatever.
im out of here.

over the break i was talking with my brother and sister-in-law about names for their new babies. they mentioned that the "in" thing to do was to name boys with girl's names and name girls with boy's names.
last night i watched the movie signs. the boy's name is morgan and the girl's name is beau. why?!? thats ridiculous. what are they trying to prove?
um, whatever.
brandtson tonight, woohoo.
and a prospective student spending the night, woohoo.

tonight i walked back to the dorm by myself after dinner. it's a pleasant evening. i was almost to the dorm (walking east) when i saw an orange reflection in a window...i turned around and there was the most amazing sunset, and i had no idea that whole time i was walking back. kinda made me think about how often we walk through life completely ignoring all the amazing things god's doing. hmm.
stuff.
the chicago trip was absolutely wonderful. except for stupid indiana roads...they cant keep their roads clear 3 days after it snows. pretty bad. o'hare is a crazy place.
im beginning to realize how much i hate winter. ive always thought i didnt mind it...and i do like snow every now and then...but all in all winter is the most miserable season ever. i'd be perfectly fine living down south for the rest of my life. well. maybe like...the carolinas...so it doesnt get too terribly hot and too terribly cold. you guys dont care about this.
nate su finally got the comp he's on from velvet blue. (www.velvetbluemusic.com) we're pretty amazed at how bad it is. we hope people dont think the same about his song. if you want to buy a copy (after i just told you how bad it is) let me know or something...10 bucks for a 2 cd set..26 songs..you cant beat that people...no matter how bad it is.
brandtson is playing here tomorrow night. ooooooooh yes. i cant wait.
i need to stop talking. i dont know why i think people want to read this thing.

polar bear club and a trip to o'hare
after the boxer run last night, i've realized that god did not create our bodies with intention for us to be rolling around in snow half naked.
for those of you who i havent filled in...on the first snow fall (or whenever there gets to be enough snow on the ground), all the guys in my dorm go run across campus in our boxers. outside, our rival dorm of wengatz is waiting us in their big comfy parkas and gloves and hats, etc, throwing snow and tackling us, etc. last year i went untouched. this year...lets just say...i went far from untouched and got back to the dorm exhausted..shaking..dizzy...and puking. it was quite a night.
this afternoon noah and i get to take bryce to the chicago airport because we're good friends. should be an 8 hour trip when all is said done. should be loads of fun.
im out of here.

here's the funny story
travis..if you happen to be reading this..this is about your father.
so the other day, i decide to go into guitar villa to get the action on my guitar lowered. erica was with me. of course, the legendary craig thatcher was working. for those of you who don't know, craig thatcher is a local rock star (seriously...he's big stuff...they don't call it the craig thatcher band for nothing) and an amazing guitar player. he is also the father of my friend travis whom i went to high school with and played ska with and stuff like that. so anyway. i said mr. thatcher, could you lower the action for me he said sure took it into the secret back room and did the trick and brought it back out. for those of you who don't know, the action is how high the strings are off the fret board. when it is lowered, the strings are closer to the board and easier and more pleasant to play. ok, this story is going from bad to worse to boring..i'll cut the the chase...
he says "let's make sure i didn't get it too low." (if it was too low, it would buzz, and that would be bad.) so he takes the bass as i follow him, and walks up to the largest bass amp in the place...an ampeg amp probably as tall as me. he pulls up a chair, plugs in, and he sits down. i knew what was about to happen...and if you shop at guitar stores you know exactly what im talking about. my stomach went into knots and my hands got all sweaty. he starts going to town on this thing. (when i tell the story in person, i say something like "and he starts going, badabadadadadadada"...but that kinda loses the effect in writing.) he finally finishes...wipes the sweat off his forehead, i wipe the sweat off my hands, and he says "yeah, see how it feels." and hands the bass to me. erica said the look on my face was pretty funny..and i dont doubt it. first off, i play with a pick which i didnt have and i never play with my fingers...second off..im just not good. LUCKILY, mr thatcher walks away...i look at erica and shrug my shoulders and pluck a string or two and play all awkwardly and finally give up. then i just shout "yep...feels good!"
thats all.

welp, see ya later.
+so it's friday already, huh? the break has flown by. it's been fun and relaxing for the most part. ive been very lackadasical about getting to see all my friends over this break...so if you were one of the people i didnt call, i apologize...but then again, you didnt call me either. oh well. there's always next time.
+winter storms are a big farce. i hate them.
+cloning is stupid too.
+new years eve is a joke as well.
+so anyway...time to go back to school. im not necessarily excited to get back to school but im definitely not dreading it. everyone talks to me like j-term must be such a drag, but it's not...it's totally sweet. the only thing that's bad about it is we dont get out til the very end of may. going back to 4 credits is a whole lot better than going back to 17 credits. you just sit around all day and party harty. and have fun j-term projects like building a coffee table in your room connected to pulleys so that it can be suspended when you arent using it. (that WILL be done.) j-term is the best thing since spring break.
+my father and i fixed the drivers door with a large screw driver. i knew you all were concerned.
+um, that's all really. i had lots of errands to run today but now i cant run them all for extenuating circumstances and the bad roads. i'll probably run some of them though. im gonna see if i can get the action on my bass lowered. that will be fun.
+im out of here. happy new year ya bums.
